Bottle It Up?
November 17, 2008
|
Bad News: Elizabeth Royte, author of "Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It," says America uses about 17 million barrels of oil each year to make plastic water bottles.
Bad News: Fewer than 20 percent of water bottles get recycled says Betty McLaughlin, executive director of the Container Recycling Institute.
Action: Illinois has canceled contracts for bottled water. Chicago has a tax of 5 cents per bottle to cover disposal costs. Michigan may extend its 10-cent deposit on soft-drink bottles to bottled water.
Good News: Bottled water sales have gone flat for the first time in 30 years.

The Bush Administration won't quit until Jan. 20. Here's the latest attack on women's health and availability of birth control.
Please contact to Thune, Johnson and Herseth-Sandlin now. Under What We Advocate, click on Contact Legislators for quick links.
I just sent this letter.
Dear------:
This summer, the Bush administration tried to keep secret a proposed federal regulation that would allow health care providers to redefine abortion to include birth control. Public protest and members of Congress forced Secy. Mike Leavitt to make the plans public. They asked the Bush administration to withdraw this damaging proposal that could keep millions of people from receiving basic health information and necessary medical care.
I believe that the best way to limit abortion is to eliminate unplanned pregnancies and to protect the health options of women beyond child-bearing years. This restriction on more than 600,000 health care agencies is unthinkable. The federal government has no business funding providers who do not abide by this most fundamental standard of of providing birth control information and care.
This is NOT about abortion! It's a violation of basic rights to health care information and services to prevent unplanned pregnancy.
The Bush administration promised not to release any new regulations after November 1. Now what? Word is out that they plan to implement the rule as early as next week.
Enough is enough! Please contact Secretary Leavitt on my behalf, demanding that this regulation not be implemented. Demand that the administration keep its promise not to release new regulations after Nov. 1.
Respectfully,
Donna Fisher

Two Big Issues: Health Care and Auto Industry Bailout
November 14, 2008
|
A DIA member invites our comments on two huge issues facing us. Your reactions?
Health Care: There is no such thing as accessable and affordable health care. If it is affordable, the access will have to be severely limited to make it affordable. Think public health care. Vaccinations, well baby check-ups, infectious disease and etc.
Subject: Bail-out for Detroit car manufacturers. NO,NO,NO-Let them go bankrupt. This will only support high union wages which is one reason they cannot compete now. Please write and call your congressmen.
