Let's Push Back for Clean Water!
September 5, 2009

The hard-working Septic Ordinance committee and the embattled Pennington County Commissioners need to hear some positive voices. So far, they've heard a chorus of "no government in my septic business!"  Despite evidence collected by SDSMT and USGS hydrologists, RC Public Works and independent consultants, nitrate and coliform issues are being attributed to causes like rotting ponderosa pine needles and too much deer feces. A geologist from the Netherlands was cited at a recent meeting.

Commissioners must hear from folks who believe our septic systems should be inspected and certified on a regular rcycle—5-6 years—for a fee as small as $50 per inspection. That's the radical "invasion of property rights" and "taking away my freedom" that the opposition is claiming. Here's a letter I sent to the Commissioners asking that they establish time limits on public comment so we all get a chance to speak at future meetings.

Our Commissioners can't read our minds.  Call them. Write them. Come to meetings. Thank them.

Donna Fisher, Pennington County, District 1
