Say Yes to Energy Bill, Sen. Thune and Johnson
July 3, 2009
|
Today the Rapid City Journal said this in an editorial urging Senator Johnson not to support the Energy Bill:
"The people of South Dakota have little interest in the bill." (A8 7-3-09)
Wrong!! Thanks to biased reporting in our media and heavy lobbying by our utilities, we've been led to believe the bill will hurt us. We see energy issues from a limited perspective of a small rural state. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and the House Blue Dogs made a mistake.
Our grandchildren and all the world's children are far more important than a little hike in our utility bills. Today's editorial sounds as if South Dakota is the only place on the planet that matters. Are you sick of this self-centered attitude when the planet's health is at stake. I am!
Ironically, supporting this bill can be a vote in our long-range self-interest. Alternative energies, not more of the same, hold the greatest promise for our economic development here in South Dakota. So far, we only serve as a land area across which coal and tar sands must be transported.
Tell Thune and Johnson to support the Energy Bill. The time for action was 20 years ago!

Solid Waste Management Public Input
June 19, 2009
|
The city of Rapid City is looking for input on how it should deal with trash, recyclables and other solid waste for the next five to 20 years. Some ideas on the table are mandatory recycling and generating energy from waste, said Jerry Wright, superintendent of solid waste operations.
The current management plan, which was created in the early 1990s, included bringing the landfill into state and federal compliance, composting yard waste and building a city recycling center, Wright said. Public meetings will be held in the future.
Residents can also e-mail ideas to Wright by going to the city's web site at www.rcgov.org/pubworks/solidwaste/solid_waste_homepage.htm.
